Harmony Baptist Herald Number 3, Winter 2005
The question, “What is truth?” has been often asked through out history. It was asked by Pontius Pilate of the Lord Jesus during his mock trial. He did not really want nor wait for a reply. He was perhaps simply trying to excuse his injustice.
This question is one that has for centuries occupied philosophers and politicians. Many believe that truth is relative, depending upon the perspective and experience of each individual. Others say that it can not be known at all. But, upon the authority of God’s Word, I say that TRUTH is absolute.
Truth affects many areas of life: mathematics and science, for example. But what about religion or morals? This is the great area of debate in our society today.
DOES 2 + 2 = 5?
Would you not be upset to learn that your child’s new teacher was teaching that it did not matter if they learned 2 + 2 = 3, or 2 + 2 = 5, or 2 + 2 = 4?
How could a child go through life thinking it did not matter whether two and two equals three, four or five? He could never advance in mathematics or science. He would end up being mocked, ridiculed, and very probably cheated. WHY? Because 2 + 2 = 4. This is a fact. It is a mathematical truth, an absolute. The science of mathematics depends upon it.
There is an even more important truth, my Friend, that is loosely handled in our society. The truth about God. In our present politically correct culture it is claimed that all religions are equally true. It is claimed that truth, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder (or holder in this case).
I am not talking about freedom of religion. It was my Baptist forefathers, such as John Leland and others, who fought for the freedoms we all now so greatly enjoy. Certainly everyone in America is free to worship their god as they see fit. I will die for this great freedom and right, as Baptists have done for hundreds of years.
BUT, it is more absurd to believe that all religions and all gods are equally true, than to believe that two and two are equally 3, 4, or 5, whichever you prefer.
Let me briefly illustrate; the Watchtower Society [“Jehovah’s Witnesses”] says that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, but denies that he is equal to God. The god of Islam has no son. The Mormons, Hindus, Roman Catholics and other “faiths” have equally conflicting “TRUTHS” about Jesus Christ and the way to God.
The Bible Says
The truth of the Bible is plainly stated in the first chapter of the Gospel of John as follows.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. . . And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:1-3,14
These verses from God’s Word plainly teach that “The Word” is the “Only Begotten of the Father”, and that He was “with God,” and that He “was God.” They also teach that He is the Creator of all things, and that He became a man and “dwelt among us.” This is of course Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.
Since I accept the Bible as the Word of God and therefore true, I believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son, the Almighty Creator of all things. This TRUTH directly contradicts what other religions teach. I do not deny their right to believe as they like, but I do reject the idea that all are equally true. That is an impossibility! It cannot be. 2 + 2 = 4, not 5 or 3.
Jesus Christ Himself said, “I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” John 14:6
TRUTH, by it’s very nature, is exclusive. Jesus said, “I am The Truth.” That excludes all other gods.
Again, I am not saying that I wish to force
everyone to believe as I do by force or threats as some denominations did in America’s past. I would not, even if I could. I do, however, pray and hope that all who read these words, might know and believe the truth of God in Christ.
But if anyone accepts as “truth” the teachings of Mohammed, Buddha, the Church of Rome,
the Watchtower Society, or any other religion, he must then logically reject all others as not true. A choice has to be made. Two and two equals exactly four. To say that 2 + 2 = 3 or 5 is false.
As Joshua said to the Israelites long ago; “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD [the God of the Bible], choose you this day whom ye will serve; . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15
Whether these gods, those gods, or the God of the Bible, my Friend, you must make a choice.
I have already made clear to you that I
believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as revealed in God’s Word, the Bible; and because He has commanded me to endeavor to make all men His disciples, I urge you also, to repent and to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ claimed to be God in the flesh and the only Savior of men. Either we must accept Him as such or we must discard Jesus as a mad man. If He is not God in the flesh, and the only Savior, then He was a liar and/or a fool. We could then, not call Him a good man, nor a good teacher. To say; “Well I do not accept all that he said,” is simply dishonest. We cannot pick and choose which parts we like or do not like. We either believe Him or we do not.
It is also impossible to say that He can be the Savior of some, but not of others. Jesus Himself said, “No man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” John 14:6
But what proof is there that Jesus Christ and the Bible are true? Jesus was asked this very question.
He predicted His own death and bodily resurrection from the dead. Buddha, Mohammed and every other religious leader is dead. My Lord Jesus is alive from the dead. In fact this is “THE ONLY PROOF” that the Lord Jesus gave when asked on two different occasions.
Our Lord was asked “What sign shewest thou unto us…?” His reply, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. . . He spake of the temple of His body. When therefore He was risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this unto them; and they believed. . .” John 2:18-19, 21-22
A year later in another town He was asked the very same question. They wanted to know: How do we know that you are God’s Son? How do we know you are true? Show us a sign. After rebuking them for their unbelief our Lord said these words. “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of Man [Jesus] be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:40
And He did rise from the dead after three days and three nights, “as He said.” After His bodily resurrection, my Lord was seen by Mary, by the eleven apostles, and by hundreds of others. Their testimonies are recorded for us in the Bible and in history. Millions have given their lives to cruel torture and death because they believed this to be true.
Because Jesus is risen from the dead and lives to
be the Judge of all men, the Bible says this, “God. . . now commandeth all men every where to repent.” Acts 17:30
And since Jesus Christ did rise from the dead after the third day, as He said, we know that He is the Son of God. We know that He is the only Savior of the world. Since He did rise from the dead, He will be the Judge of all men; and therefore, you must repent and trust upon Him as your only hope for salvation. Because He did raise from the dead, He is “the Truth,” and those who reject Him must abandon all hope for eternity.
Because Jesus Christ is risen from the dead after having been put to death for sinners, the Bible says this, “. . . He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25
I urge you, my Friend, turn from your unbelief and sin and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Trust solely on Him for the salvation of your soul.
