We come now to the seventh of the Ten Commandments, which simply says, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” This seems very simple and straight forward to understand. On the surface this command of God clearly condemns as sinners millions in our nation and thousands in our own community. Adultery is committed by any married person having sexual relations with anyone other than their spouse. But nearly all respected commentaries or catechisms will explain that the meaning of this command is far more broad, including “all unchaste thoughts, words, and actions.” (A Baptist Catechism) I quote also Matthew Poole’s commentary as an example: “Here is mentioned one kind of uncleanness, as being eminently sinful, and unjust, and pernicious to human society. But under this are comprehended and forbidden all other kinds of filthiness, as bestiality, sodomy, whoredom, fornication, &c., and all means, occasions, and appearances of them;”
Marriage Is Ordained of God
In the New Testament the Holy Scriptures say, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” Heb. 13:4 This simple text tells us two very important truths.
1. Marriage is an honorable estate, ordained of God in the Garden of Eden. By God’s wisdom and grace marriage was ordained for the benefit and continued existence of mankind. God said, “it is not good that man should be alone.” We are social beings who prosper and are enhanced by a loving husband-wife relationship. Marriage is also for, but not exclusively so, procreation, that the human race should continue. In every culture “holy matrimony” is an honorable estate not to be taken lightly.
2. Secondly, to guard and to set a hedge about the wonderful institution of marriage and to set men apart from the beasts of the field, God has declared that all sexual activity outside of the marriage bed is sin. Two words are used. The second word is the simple word “adulterers,” and is as we said above, any sexual activity conducted by any married person with anyone other than the one to whom they are married. The first word, “whoremongers” is the original Greek word pornos (pornos). From this our English word pornography comes. It includes all immorality such as prostitution, sodomy, lesbianism, bestiality, etc.
There is no debate, nor is there any gray area subject to opinions of men. Marriage is one man and one woman joined together for life, by a mutual consent, and the public exchanging of vows. The Lord Jesus said, “And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” Mark 10:8,9 The prophet of God tells us that God hates divorce. (Mal. 2:16)
Immorality, Now Acceptable
The institution of marriage and the seventh commandment are being absolutely shredded in present day America. It is no wonder, to me, that God’s chastening hand is upon our land because of our immorality as well as the murder of millions of innocent unborn babies. [The subject of our last issue concerning God’s sixth commandment.] In 2007 “about 40 percent” of births were to unwed mothers.1 (Equal to about 1.7 million babies.) Most of these were not teens, but young women in their 20’s and 30’s who simply do not bother to get married. Rather young men and women of today live as do the beasts of the field, and simply participate in indiscriminate sex. Many just live together. By the way, it is not only the young. Many “older” Americans, most often excused on financial grounds, also choose to “live together” rather than get married. Not too many years ago it was considered a real shame to have an affair or to have a baby out of wedlock. Today we have TV shows such as “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette,” “The cougar,” “Sex in the City,” to name just a few, that portray “sleeping around” not only as not sinful, but as something to be desired and encouraged. When I was growing up the women on those shows and those who imitate them would have been called “sluts.” (I apologize for the crude word, but if we do not return to looking upon sin as sinful and wicked, we will never see our nation or community turned back to God.)
Sin does not cease to be sin, simply because it becomes common practice or is approved of by a majority. God, the Creator and only Lawgiver, plainly says, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
“Sodomites in the Land”
One of the greatest threats to our nation and the institution of marriage is the acceptance of sodomy as simply an “alternative lifestyle.” Sodomites do not simply choose another harmless way of living such as one might choose to live without credit cards, or an automobile, but it is a complete perversion of both nature and God’s Law. One thing that is true about the term, “alternative lifestyle,” is the fact that it is a choice. No one is born to be a murderer or rapist, nor is one born to be a sodomite. It is not all that long ago that this sin was a crime in all 50 States. It was then recognized by the vast majority of our society as immoral and wrong, as well as destructive to society, and thus made illegal. The Bible is very clear about this sin. God’s description in Romans 1 of the depravity of the human race that casts aside the worship of the One True God says in part, “Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.” (Romans 1:24-27) Notice that after “God gave them up unto vile affections…” then “…their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly.” (See also Deut. 23:17; Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; 1 Tim. 1:9-10 etc.) In Leviticus chapter 18 God mentions the sins of adultery, child sacrifice, sodomy/homosexuality, and bestiality and then gives to Israel this strong warning, “Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.” Those nations guilty of such things God cast out because they had defiled the land. Why would we deceive ourselves into thinking that God would spare this nation? History is littered with great nations that died because of moral decay within. Do not lose sight of the last words of the text in Romans above, “…receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.” The cases of HIV AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases that are of epidemic proportions are just that, God’s just recompense upon those who reject Him and live in
rebellion to Him and His will.
Satan Seeks to Silence the Truth
The enemy of our souls is doing his best to make sin acceptable in this once “Christian Nation.” One of the ways he has done this is by the perversion of the Holy Scriptures. Very few churches still use the King James Version of the Bible. Most of the new versions, including the NIV and the Douay, have removed the use of the term “sodomite” or “sodomites” in the Old Testament and have greatly weakened references to it in the New Testament. While I cannot speak for the motives of all of those involved, at least two involved in the work of the NIV were themselves guilty of this sin. The Church of Rome that uses the Douay version has been guilty of protecting many who are guilty of such among her “priests” who
are unscripturally denied wives.
Certainly no one advocates violence against any sinner. But neither should God’s people be silent. Today the political correctness crowd seeks to silence the truth of God. Those who practice this form of wickedness have powerful allies who seek to intimidate and silence anyone who speaks the truth. Even though a majority of citizens always rejects the legalizing of marriage between homosexuals, the autocrats on the Bench have made it legal in several States. But even if it becomes the law in all the land, it will still be wrong in the sight of God, and our Nation will be under the curse of God. Proverbs 14:34 is still true, “Righteousness
exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” It should be a great source of shame and reproach to America to have such perverted individuals in congress, or as business leaders, or accepted as “stars.” Many years ago those in “Hollywood” who were sodomites tried to keep their sin secret. But today it is openly bragged about and crammed down our throats by TV shows and movies.
God’s Hope For Sinners
Some may think that the above paragraphs are unloving and harsh. As to being harsh, I hope this is not the case, for such is certainly not my intention. As to the accusation of being unloving, let me ask you a couple of questions. Is it “unloving” for a mother to tell her child not to play in the street? Toward whom would my love be if I failed to confront a friend on drugs, and seek to help him change his life? Would I not be guilty of loving myself more than my friend? Indeed I would. True love does not hold back the truth when it is necessary. He may not be appreciated, and in fact, may be hated for it. But it is still the right thing to do.
So, my Friend, I speak the truth of God. It would be far easier for me to be silent. But God’s Word is light to shine upon the darkness of our sin and reveal to us our need for repentance and a Savior. Even though God may bring judgment upon our land and He may allow sinners to be infected by all types of disease, this is the least of God’s curse upon sin. For “the wages of sin is death.” And “the soul that sinneth it shall die.” God’s ultimate judgment upon all sin and every sinner is death, both physical and spiritual. God is holy and just, and no sin will go unpunished.
My Friend, as bad as immorality is, it is only the symptom of the root problem. The real problem is our rebellious and sinful hearts. The Bible declares our root trouble this way, “All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one into his own way:” (Is. 53:6) Our root sin is self. We do what we want to do rather than doing God’s will. This may manifest itself in some by drunkenness, and in others by idolatry, or by immorality of one type or another. But it is all abomination before a holy God. In reality we sin with nearly every breath we take, because we are doing, saying, and thinking what WE want and choose rather than seeking and doing God’s will. Anything that is not done in perfect accordance with God’s will and for the sole purpose of pleasing God, is sin. We sin because we live for self. For Jesus said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.” (Mt. 22:37,38) So you see we are all great sinners, guilty before God.
But God is rich in mercy, and His love has been demonstrated towards us. God would have been perfectly right and just to leave us all in our sins. He would have been right to cast everyone of us into hell. For that is what we deserve. But “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” And “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,” says the Scripture. We also read, “He shall save His people from their sins.” The Prophet Isaiah gives us these beautiful words about our Lord Jesus, “… Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted….But he was wounded for our transgressions, … the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all, …Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him;” Clearly we see that the death of Jesus Christ was a substitutionary atonement. As the Apostle says, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
Do you know yourself to be a sinner before God, deserving of nothing but His wrath and judgment? I urge you then to look to Him in faith as the One Who died in your place. Cast yourself upon Jesus alone as “the lamb of God.” Isaiah also has this beautiful verse, “He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied:” as Jesus said, “It is finished.” God was satisfied. The price of redemption was paid. There is nothing to be added to it. In fact any attempt to do so is to reject Christ as the perfect, once-for-all sacrifice for sin. He is risen from the grave, and is ascended to the right hand of the Father, and there He makes intercession for every soul who trusts upon Him. You do not need any earthly priest, nor do you need to be baptized or say a prayer, nor any other thing. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has done all there is to do to save every soul who trusts in Him. I leave you with these verses of God’s Holy Word.
“But this man, (Jesus) after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;” (Heb. 10:12
“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” (Heb. 7:25
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16
