01 – Knowing God Through His Word

What is Psalm 119 about? Psalm 119 is a Hebrew poem, or psalm, expressing gratitude and love for God’s written word as the greatest treasure, because we come to know God through his written word. This psalm is about the relationship we have with God through reading and keeping his word.

Out of the 150 Psalms in the Bible, three are explicitly about the Bible, or the Scriptures: Psalm 1, 19, and 119. Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm with 176 verses. It is arranged in 22 stanzas with 8 verses each. Each verse in a stanza begins with the same Hebrew letter. There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet and the stanzas are arranged to go through the alphabet from beginning to end. Every verse in the first stanza begins with Aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Every verse of the second stanza begins with Beth, the second letter, and so on. Almost every verse out of the 176 verses refers directly to the Bible as God’s word.

This sermon series will go verse-by-verse through this psalm, one stanza at a time.
